John Kanell

John Kanell (BFA, UCLA) is a painter based in Los Angeles and New York. His work reimagines the tradition of landscape painting by rendering the distinct architectural vernacular  of Southern California residential vistas as unpopulated dream-like spaces. Using a tonal palette that reflects a soft atmospheric haze, Kanell often incorporates silver and gold leaf to accentuate the flattened geometries  that render his compositions both uncannily uninhabitable yet formally alluring.
